The definition of “hosting” doesn't describe one service, but a variety of services that provide numerous functions to a domain address. Having a site and e-mails, for instance, are two individual services even though in the general case they come together, so a lot of people think of them as one single service. In fact, every domain name has a several DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that deals with each specific service - the first one is a numeric IP address, which identifies where the website for the domain address is loaded from, while the latter is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that handles the emails for the domain. For example, an A record is 123.123.123.123 and an MX record can be mx1.domain.com. Whenever you open a site or send an e-mail, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a domain has and the traffic/message is first forwarded to that company. If you have custom records on their end, the web browser request or the email will be forwarded to the correct server. The idea behind employing separate records is that the two services work with different web protocols and you could have your site hosted by one service provider and the emails by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Cloud Hosting

If you have a cloud hosting account through our company and you wish to direct either your website or your e-mails to another service provider, it will take you literally simply two mouse clicks to do so. Our Hepsia CP provides an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domains and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you're going to be able to see and modify the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you choose to use a different email provider and they ask you to create more MX records than the standard 2, it won't take more than a few clicks either to add them. You can even set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the greater the priority a certain MX record will have. The propagation of any record that you change or set up will not take more than several hours and if required, you will also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, that reveals how long a record will stay active after it is modified or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

The Hepsia hosting CP, included with our Linux semi-dedicated packages, will allow you to view the A and MX records for every one of the domain addresses or subdomains in your account and if necessary, to edit any of them or set up new ones. Controlling these records is very easy as all domains/subdomains will be listed alphabetically, so modifying a record is as simple as entering it in a box and saving the change. Setting up a new one takes only a few more clicks and if you experience any issues, you can check out our video tutorials on how to create A and MX records. Our system is intuitive enough to be used by people with little or no previous experience, yet advanced enough to give you 100 % control of all records and to enable you to have different A records even for domain.com and www.domain.com. If you are moving your emails to a different company and they ask you to create more than two different MX records, you can select the priority of each one.
